What Causes Pain In Back Ribs?

My husband had 5 by passes 7 months ago. He did remarkably well with surgery and afterwards. He started weight lifting a month ago on his own and has pain in the middle of his back where ribs attach to the spine. The small movements bother him more than large movements. He is also a dentist that has to twist and turn in a sitting position. What could this be related to and who should he consult? His cardiologist, his surgeon, family practice?
