Hi,

Stiffness is common for back as the age advances but if it causes severe pain on stretching it indicates that there is something wrong with the disc. These are features of disc herniation, you need to get a thorough clinical examination along with an X-ray of the spine and if required then MRI also. Only then the diagnosis will be confirmed and further line of treatment will be decided. In the meantime, you can do warm saline fomentation, physiotherapy and some over the counter painkillers.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
