What Causes Pain In Bottom Of Head Around Neck?

My name is Itzel. I am 18 years old. I ve been getting throbbing in the back and bottom of my head, near my neck. I get really scared because it had never occurred before. I find myself stressed out, but my hand also shakes and I have passed out before due to low blood sugar. I m scared to go to the doctor. What does it mean? Please help.

Hello Itzel!

Thank you for your question on HCM!

I read your question carefully and understand your concern.

Your symptoms may be related to different disorders:

a) an occipital neuralgia, which is an irritation of the occipital nerve. The pain is typically throbbing and shock like and lasts for minutes. It can be exacerbated by head movements or physical exercise.

b) low blood pressure. This could also explain your previous episodes of fainting. Have you measured your blood pressure during these episodes?

I recommend consulting with your GP for a careful physical examination, a routine blood test.

A brain CT scan may be necessary to be performed, to exclude other possible intracranial causes that may mimic this clinical scenario.

Hope to have been of help!

Best wishes,
Dr. Aida
