What Causes Pain In Buttocks While Getting Up From Sitting Position?

I am having pain in my right buttock which causes me to limp when getting up from a seated position and also when going upstairs and even pain whilst lying in bed. I have had an MRI which states mild annular laxity in L3/4.... With a small annular tear. Moderate degenerative changes of the facet joints bilaterralyy also and also in the L 4/5. In the L5/S1 the facet joint degeneration is moderate to severe. My doctor more or less indicated that it is arthritis and prescribed Voltaren. A friend had similar symptons and hers was referring to hamstring pain where the hamstring contects up into the buttocks. I am a male, 63 years of age. This is really atarting to affect my golf! Help!

Hello,
Thanks for your query.
The most propable cause for your pain could be due to arthritic changes (wear & tear) in the hip joint as well as lumbar spine. At your age degenerative changes are common.

Plain xrays of the Hip joint and Lumbosacral spine will show up the severity of arthritic changes. An MRI scan of the L.S.Spine is needed to establish the diagnosis of nerve compression.

Symptomatic treatment for your condition include
* Simple analgesics like Tylenol or Aleve as needed
* Regular supplements of Neurotropic Vitamins B2,B6 & B12 which help in alleviating the numbness.
* Moist heat fomentation over the painful areas which allows the underlying muscles to relax
* Local massaging of the painful areas with a muscle relaxant gel will yield good pain relief
* Ultrasound therapy and TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) may also be helpful.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

Take care
