What Causes Pain In Left Nipple?

I have had two days of pain in my left nipple to the point where even the towel brushing against it was agony and today the skin is rough and looks a bit scabby. should i be worried? i am in the middle of my period if that has an relevance and usually get sore breasts but this is different to normal.
