What Causes Pain In The Eyes?

Hi. I am having a problem w/my eye. I wear contacts, but have no problems w/them. Once I take out my left contact, it feels like something is poking my eye. It hurts and I have to keep my eye shut. The pain lasts throughtout that night, the next day, and by the third day it has pretty much subsided. Also, the lid, where my eyelashes are, itch like crazy.
