What Causes Pain In The Rib Cage On The Left Side?

I have been experiencing pain in my left rib cage. It feels like it is under the bottom rib. Sometimes it is very sharp and painful.. Almost like a foot sticking into the rib cage while pregnant... but more painful. I am 55 and am not pregnant. I have had this pain in the past but not as bad. After examining myself in the mirror I can see that my left rib juts out in a bump... this seems to be new. The severe pain is not constant....just sometimes feels like a knife twisting in me. I do not have shoulder pain and I haven t done any exercise lately that would cause this.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The possibilities are a musculoskeletal pain as in costochondritis.

As a first line management, you can try analgesics like Aceclofenac or Tramadol for pain relief.

If symptoms persist better to consult a physician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
