Hello, I am a 60 year old male who takes a mild high blood pressure medication. Recently, I had a cold sore for the first time in 30 years. Upon clearing up last week, I began to experience occasional sharp, stabbing pains in the right temple area. My skin on my right forehead and cheek also began to feel sensitive and prickly. I experience this pain now twenty five to thirty times per day and it only lasts 3 to 4 seconds and only on the right side of the head by the temple but the skin also becomes sensitive near the pain area. Your advice.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Your symptoms are highly suggestive of the condition called as cluster headache. The other possible cause is a secondary headache because of sinusitis. but this is less likely. If it's a cluster headache you will need a medicine called indomethacin. Since this needs to evaluate other secondary causes which should be ruled out l have suggested meeting a neurologist. I have tried to make it as simple as possible. Feel free to contact me if you need any further information.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
