What Causes Pain In The Upper Rib Cage Below The Arm Pit?

My 16 year old complained on Friday about some pain in the upper rib cage, right bellow his left arm pit, he didn't complain again until Sunday, he was feeling awkward and uneasy most of the day. I put some ointment for muscles and took him for a walk which seemed to ease the discomfort.

What could it be?

Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your son's situation and problem.
Possibility of musculoskeletal pain is more in his case.
But better to rule out heart diseases first because he is having left sided chest pain.
So get done ecg and 2d echo.
If both are normal than no need to worry for heart diseases.
Musculoskeletal pain is more likely.
Ask him to avoid heavyweight lifting and strenuous exercise.
Avoid movements causing pain. Avoid bad postures in sleep. Apply warm water pad on affected areas. Give him painkiller and muscle relaxant drugs.
Don't worry, he will be alright.
Hope I have solved your query. Wishing good health to your son. Thanks.
