Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Pain Under The Ribs Post A Gallbladder Removal Surgery?
My sluggish gallbladder was removed Oct of last year. I am a recovering alcoholic. Since the removal, I have been experiencing mild to moderate pain under my ribs, right side, sometimes in my back. What could this be? Is there such a thing as gallbladder phantom pain? Like my amputee mother gets in her missing leg?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. Pain in the right abdomen under rib cage after gallbladder removal can be due to one of the following reasons as it is referred to the back also. Gastritis with gastric ulcer on the posterior stomach wall. Pancreatitis as you are alcoholic. Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation: Consult a Gastroenterologist for clinical evaluation, examination and investigations: Upper GI endoscopy and biopsy. Ultrasonography and CT scan or MRCP to see for any problem with liver and pancreas. Relevant blood and stool tests. ALl these will lead to a diagnosis and gives plan of proper management.
