What Causes Painful And Swollen Throat?

I am having a dull, sore pain on the left side of my throat. It seems to have traveled up to the left side of my jaw, almost making my teeth or gums sore. It also feels swollen underneath the left side of my tongue. I am a smoker and the dull pain one one side of the throat has happened in the past whenever I smoke too many cigarettes in a days time or so, but never the rest of the symptoms as well. I m just wondering if I should be worried or if this needs immediate attention. Also, I am a 29 yr old female.
