What Causes Persistant Cough And Voice Hoarseness While On Omeprazole?
My husband wakes up in the middle of the night choking and gagging. He has suffered with acid reflux for years. He has been prescribed nexium and now on omeprazole. Now he has persistent non productive cough, and hoarseness, don t think medication is working. What more can he do?
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. Chronic acid reflux can cause bronchitis (inflammation of airways) and this in turn causes coughing and hoarseness of voice. So we should first treat acid reflux to reduce coughing. Only drugs (pantoprazole or omeprazole) are not sufficient for acid reflux. He should follow these lifestyle modifications. So tell him to avoid hot and spicy food, junk food, large meals, stress and tension. Go for walking after meals. Better to quit smoking and alcohol if he has these symptoms. Keep 2-3 pillows under head in bed to prevent reflux. Don't worry, he will be alright with all these. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your husband. Thanks.
