Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had diarrhea for the past two months. I have seen my nurse practitioner twice during this time. I am waiting for results from a stool test, culture and sensitivity, ova and parasites. I have a referral to see a GI doctor but the first available appt is August 15. In the meantime I am using Imodium and Benefiber and have 2 to 3 stools per day that look like yellowish pudding. I have no pain. I weigh 110 lbs, I’ve lost six lbs. I am 74 years old. I have a mechanical mitral valve and use warfarin. I am not getting better. What should I do while I wait to see the GI doctor. Is there another way to diagnose this problem? I’m feeling desperate.

What Causes Persistent Diarrhea?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. If you re suffering from loose motion then why you want to take Benefiber? Stop it and see the result. Other possibilities like food intolerance or malabsorption syndromes or irritable bowel syndrome or infection etc. Use probiotics. Take soft diet which will provoke to grow bacteria. Avoid spicy food and alcohol avoid smoking and caffeine drinks. Avoid lactose and gluten contain food. If symptoms not improved please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly. Take care.
