What Causes Persistent Nasal Congestion And Cough Despite Taking Desloratidine?

Am 81 years of age, in general good health, gym exercise 2 - 3 times per week, height 5'10" and 173 pounds No health problems other than seasonal, animal and environmental allergies; take Rx allergy meds (Rx nasal sprays and Desloratadine), blood pressure 117/70 and under ongoing care of Allergy MD, including allergy shots. Also have semi-annual General Med Physician checkups. Have had a cold virus for about 8 - 10 weeks. Gets better but symptoms of runny nose and coughing don't completely disappear but return. Any thoughts

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, your symptoms appear to be due to allergy rather than viral cold, as viral infection generally don't last for so long.
Desloratidine is a symptomatic drug which means it acts on the symptoms of disease like runny nose, nasal congestion. It does not act on the disease itself. So unless the allergy causing agent is not blocked your symptoms will not be cured.
So I would suggest pay close attention to any environmental or behavioral change that might be the cause for this allergy and try to avoid exposure to that.
Hope this info helps. Thank you.
