Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Need to speak to a doctor that has worked in the E.R. I have a phobia of illegal drugs. In order to get over my phobia I need to speak with an E.R doctor that has dealt with different patients that have come into the E.R that have taken illegal drugs.More or less, in order to help with my phobia...I am fearing the 'unknown' of how much help you would actually get if 'my worst case scenario' would ever come true, although since I am phobic of it...its a very small chance, but in order to stop panicking....it would help greatly to be able to know what would actually go on if I felt I was 'drugged' and went to to E.R for help. Can anyone speak to me about this??
I have run a drug clinic in a local jail for 5 years. Since these drugs are illicit, I cannot recommend exposure therapy involving actually using these drugs. It seems that you are having obsessive thought rather than a phobia per se. I would recommend that you obtain legally, a course of treatment of the antidepressant drug anafranil. If your panic attacks are severe then ask your physician for a low dose of alprazolam to be used judiciously - only as needed on an infrequent basis.
I also want you to spend 15 minutes a day, twice a day, thinking about the worst case scenario of you using these drugs and the legal and mental trouble this use would bring to your life. Do this daily with great concentration until these thoughts no longer disturb you.
