What Causes Pig Valve To Get Dislocated And Float Around In Heart?
My brother just had his second heart operation to replace his mitrill valve in his heart. The first was open heart and repaired the valve.it didn t work and 3 months later they did robotic and installed a pig valve. This morning 3 weeks after the second surgery he became very short of brith and ambulance carried him to hospital. It was found the the pig valve was not in place but floating around in his heart. They put him on life support hoping he will regain strength so they can operate again. Have you ever seen this happen before.
Hello! Thank you for asking on HCM! i would like to explain that biological (pig) heart valve prostheses are a valuable option when dealing with heart valve disease. When valve repair is not feasible, then repair remains the only option. Biological valve has a favourable hemodynamis profile and are more safe (compared to mechanical ones) regarding the risk of thromboembolism. They are preferable in elderly persons. But in general the lack durability. After 7-15 years they need replacement. Regarding your brother's situation it seems that we have to do with prosthesis dehiscence. It is pissible to happen when the supporting stratum isn't sustainable, or an ifection has occured in the surrounding area. That may be the most probable explanation. However a transesophageal cardiac ultrasound would definitely clarify the reason. Hope to have been helpful to you. Greetings! Dr. Iliri
