What Causes Poor Bladder Control After Prolonged Catheterisation?

Hi Dr Rynne, my husband was in ICU for more than a month and came home with a urinary catheter bec his prostate enlarged evidently from all the stress in ICU and blocked off his urine flow. He is concerned that his bladder is getting flabby bec it is not getting any exercise. he has had the catheter taken out a number of times and still cannot urinate. Should he be training his bladder to work again? Rebecca

Hello Rebecca and welcome to HCM.
The prostate does not enlarge from stress. It's a gradual growth in males, that starts after 45-50 years age, and can cause obstruction over a period of time.If repeated trials of catheter removal, failed to allow him to pass urine, he'll need to consider having an endoscopic surgery for removal of prostate gland. His physician will need to allow the surgery, whenever his medical condition permits that.
