This is so because, the pregnancy test detects the presence of the HCG hormone in blood which remains in blood for over three to fours after termination of pregnancy. The duration can be increased in cases where an individual suffers from retained products of the placenta, thus the retained placenta continues to secret the hormone. Another scenario could be that the abortion was not successful and so the pregnancy is still evolving. You should do an ultrasound which will see if there is still a pregnancy or retained products.
