What Causes Pressure In The Head?

I am experiencing strange sensations in my head. It happens at random and only lasts for a couple of seconds. It s hard to explain, but I ll try. It feels like an immense pressure on my head along with the tightening of everything in my body. I have to shut my eyes and along with the feeling of pressure, it feels like my head is underwater and there are waves going through it. But it only lasts for a second or two. No longer than 10 seconds at most. This started happening last year. It happened maybe 3 or 4 times in 2013, but now its happening to the tune of around once a month. In fact, this month it has happened twice. I m not sure what this is, but from what I ve read it sounds like a type of seizure. It mostly happens while I am sleeping, and it will wake me up. I d like to get an opinion on this before I book any sort of appointment.

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

I read your question carefully and understand your concern.

I would like to understand how you can measure the time of the seizure, while you are sleeping. How old are you?

Symptoms can lead to different clinical diagnosis just based on the age or the onset.

Your symptoms may be related to seizures or to sleep disorders (based on the fact that they occur always while sleeping).

I recommend consulting with the neurologist for a careful physical examination.

A prolonged 24 hour EEG and a polysomnography are necessary to exclude the above mentioned disorders.

Further tests, like a brain CT scan may be needed to establish the diagnosis.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best wishes,

Dr. Aida
