Hello. I am a 30 year old female with PCOS. I have been taking Metformin ER for 4 months now. My periods were usually 3/4 days regularly. Now I am experiencing periods that last 5-7 days with days of no bleeding during that time. Is this normal? I will have a regular period for 3/4 days then the bleeding will stop for a day or so then I will have significant spoting for a few days.
I can understand your concern. If you are not on birth control and having unprotected sexual intercourse, you should go for a pregnancy test first as spotting for a longer time can indicate pregnancy. In case of negative test, if you are spotting only this month, you can ignore it and wait for next cycle. If the same experience happens, you may have to consult your gynecologist for examination.
Have you been your doctor after starting Metformin during these 4 months? It seems that the dose you were prescribed before is little high for your current situation and it requires adjustment.
I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish you feel better soon!
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
