What Causes Protruding Eyes?

Ziting, my girlfriend s neighbor in rural China, has had a condition for about a year causing her eye(s) to protrude that the local physicians say is caused by exposure to dust, will require an operation, and will affect her brain if left untreated. Any thoughts on what this might be? Am trying to get a more definitive diagnosis but don t have it yet.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The most common cause of bulging eyes that is proptosis is a thyroid condition and we need to take care of that first . yes some surgeries are available for proptosis but first we need to treat the condition. if she has a Tumor in the brain or the optic nerve that causing the eye to bulge then she will need surgery for the same .
