What Causes Purple Colour Beneath Finger Nails?

The color beneath my finger nails appears to be turning to a dark purplish color. As if I some how I bruised the flesh under my finger nails. It's darker towards the base of the finger nail and gets lighter as it extends towards the finger nail tips.
