A couple months ago I had a sore throat. A few weeks later I felt something in my tonsil area. I used my finger to dislodge a large amount of pus resembling a colony of small white beads. In the last couple of weeks I contracted a cold and just today I again felt something in the tonsil area, both times on the right side. I used my finger again and dislodged another colony of hard white pus beads. Is this normal for an adult male of 53 who still has his tonsils?
Hello and thanks for your question. What you are describing are tonsil stones, also called tonsiliths or tonsilloliths. They are fairly common and can cause problems with pain and bad breath. They occur when the tonsils develop crypts, food packs in the crypts then spoils and makes the little white balls of bacteria and spoiled food. Here is a website to give you more information http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/guide/tonsil-stones-tonsilloliths-treatment-and-prevention If the tonsil stones are very problematic ENT doctors can use surgery or laser treatments to smooth out the tonsils and remove the cypts. Thank you for using HCM.
