I wet jogging last night in 90 degree weather, after about 6 miles I felt fine and my HR was about 145, I then decided to drink some ice water and also put some on my face. Immediately after that I started jogging again and my HR instantly spiked to 221 and I felt like I was going to pass out. Now 6 hours later my heart still feels like it is racing. What should I do??

Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hi,
When a person runs for long distances, muscles do not get enough oxygen and they break down releasing substances in the blood causing disbalance of electrolytes. This may cause heart rhythm problems.
Please, stay hydrated with sports drinks and check your heart rate, if it is more than 100 beats per minute contact your doctor.
Furthermore, I advise you to wear a heart rate monitor (a watch or a pedometer) while you are running. When you run you should keep your heart rate no more than 85% of maximum heart rate.
Maximum heart rate is calculated by 220 - your age.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
