Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi my daughter is 14 and 135 lbs, 5 ft tall. She has experienced rapid heartbeats a few times a day - she says for a couple of weeks - without anxiety. going to try no caffeine but has not had an abundance of it - we have been referred to a pediatric cardiologist just to be sure - can you tell me what that could be?
Hello. This is probably what's know as a supraventricular tachycardia--an arrhythmia. She'll need an EKG, an echocardiogram, and a Holter monitor--a continual EKG--to see exactly what's going on here. It isn't too serious and it can be treated with beta blocker or calcium channel blocker medications
I recommend consulting with the pediatric cardiologist for a careful physical examination, a resting ECG and cardiac ultrasound to examine her cardiac function and some blood lab tests (complete blood count, thyroid hormone levels, blood electrolytes, kidney and liver function tests).
An ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring may be necessary if suspicions of possible cardiac arrhythmia are raised.
Hope to have been helpful!
Feel free to ask any other questions whenever you need!
Greetings!
Dr. Iliri
