What Causes Recurrence Of CD After Ileocolectomy?

MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN BATTLING WITH CROHNS FOR THE LAST 4 YEARS. SHE HAS BEEN ON SEVERAL MEDICATIONS SINCE SHE WAS FIRST DIAGNOSED TO INCLUDE 6MP, REMIDACE, PREDNISONE, ASACOL, PENTASA. SHE HAS ALSO UNDERGONE ILEOCOLECTOMY TO RELIEVE THE SYMPTOMS OF THE INFLAMMATION AND ULCERATION. NOW, SINCE THE SURGERY, SHE HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING SYMPTOMS OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS OR IBD, AS WELL AS SKIN MANIFESTATION IN THE FORM OF SMALL RED MARKS RESEMBLING INSECT BITES ALL OVER HER LOWER EXTREMITIES AND SOME SCATTERED OVER THE UPPER EXTREMITIES. THEY USED TO BE FLAT, BUT NOW ARE SLIGHTLY RAISED. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON AN ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT FOR AUTOIMMUNE ILLNESSES SUCH AS THIS?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
I can understand your concern towards your daughter's health.
Surgery was done as disease was either progressive or not responsive to medical treatment. Even after surgery, few medications are necessary to prevent progression of extra-intestinal manifestations of ulcerative colitis.
Eyes, joints, skin, liver might get affected in extra-intestinal manifestations of ulcerative colitis. Surgery had removed affected portion of intestines only, it doesn't have any favouralbe effect on extra-intestinal manifestations. It is recommended to continue medications to prevent progression of extra-intestinal manifestations even after surgery (Prednisolone, Pentasa, 6MP)
