Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother who is age 75 has been suffering from random but mostly monthly bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. She had breast cacncer about 10 years ago and does take high blood pressure medicine. She seems to have early signs of dementia (short term memory loss) and she has developed a drinking problem over the past 2 years. She wakes up at night and drinks gin to go back to sleep. She may also drink in the morning sometimes. I don’t think she has told her doctor about the drinking. My question is what could be causing the vomiting and diarrhea? I have observed her episodes a few times when I am home visiting and it doesn’t appear to be related to the drinking.
Several reasons could be there for vomiting and diarrhea but the most common are, intestinal infection and dyspepsia these could be associated with more acid secretion in stomach, alcohol may aggravate the symptoms, first thing is to rule out the possibilities of given reasons or conditions.
