Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Recurring Diarrhea With Bowel Incontinence?
Im a 49 year old female in good health. For about a month I get diarrea about 3 times a week, generally after I eat. No pattern with which foods cause it. It comes with gas and leaking bowels. Otherwise I feel fine. No fever, no aches or pains. Taking an Imodium helps end it for that day but it comes back a few days later. Any ideas what this is?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Recurrent diarrhea which is controlled with Imodium to recur within a few day and going on for one moth must have a reason as Imodium acts on colon symptomatically to stop diarrhea and the moment its action wears off, you are getting diarrhea again. Hence I would advise you the following: Get the stool test and blood tests for thyroid and CB. IF there is an evidence of an infection a course of an antibiotic can cure your problems. If there is no complete relief with antibiotic treatment then you may need a colonoscopy and CT scan of the abdomen with further management as per the findings. If all the tests are normal then this may be IBS that is irritable bowel syndrome and get treated accordingly, get a control over the stress and anxiety.
