What Causes Red Lumps Like Allergic Reaction After Knee Surgery?

My mom had knee surgery a few months ago and she has recently had these bruises that will itch and then flare up with red lumps like an allergic reaction they last a couple of days and when they disappear her skin stays a darker shade of her normal skin tone. Her surgeon said it might be a reaction to the pain meds and to just apply hydrocortisone cream. It doesn t seem to be helping any suggestions??

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your mother's history and would like to make suggestions for her as follows:

1. Pain-medications from NSAIDs groups are very much known to cause such reactions. If your mother is taking such medications, they could be the first cause to think about.

2. In that case, I usually suggest my patients paracetamol as safer pain medication. If it does not help, some pain-medicines such as celecoxib, rofecoxib, etc might help.

3. For treatment of itching and skin lesions, I suggest my patients levocetirizine + montelukast, which helps.

4. If your mother is not taking pain medications, there are many possible causes of such itchy lesions, which should be diagnosed by detailed information and appropriate investigations.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish your mother the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
