Hello, I have a mother who is 70 y/o currently on Synthroid (Been on it for 20 years) that noticed today she has a red swelling (color of dark blood) coming out of the left bottom of her tongue. I m worried that this might be cancerous. Is this normal? Is it from just biting and a blood vessle? It is not painful. Thank you!
The symptoms you mention in query are probably due to mucocele . It occur when the duct of salivary gland get blocked with any foreign body or stone . This usually harmless and can be easily treatable . I would suggest you to consult oral pathologist for proper diagnosis and rule out condition like malignant growth . Doctor may give small incision under local anesthesia and remove the salivary gland . Doctor may also perform marsupilization of mucocele . Till then do warm saline gargles and maintain proper oral hygiene .
Hope your concern has been resolved. Get Well soon. Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
