What Causes Reddish Brown Discharge Inspite Of Being On Birth Control?

I am 23 years old and have a healthy medical back ground. I have been on birth control for 4 years now. My last period started 10/9 I started my new birth control on 10/ 14. I had sex on 10/15 and then on 10/23 I started having brown/red discharge. Every since then I have had brown/red discharge and it is kinda grainy. Should I be worried?

Hi,

The possible causes of your brown or red discharge are:
- While being on birth control pills some amount of menstrual irregularities like inter menstrual spotting can be expected and sometimes that mixed with vaginal mucous can present as brownish discharge.
-Local causes like cervical erosion, polyps etc can also lead to red or brownish.

If the discharge is persisting, better to consult your Gynecologist once, go for clinical examination and if needed ultrasound, with this workup the possible cause of your problem can be identified and treatment can be planned accordingly.

In case of local causes like erosion, course of local antibiotics can help to decrease the problem. No need to worry as according to your history and age there may not be any major problem.
