What Causes Redness And Itching At Pierced Site After Applying Bandaid?

I started college in the fall and my mom bought me everything imaginable that I could ever need, including a full 'first aid kit.' In it she put bandaids of course. It was a brand that I have never used before. Recently I got a new piercing that requires to have a bandaid on it every once in awhile. I started using the bandaids my mom got me. When I took them off I noticed a bright red spot where the bandaid was. At first I just thought it was because I had just taken the bandaid off and it was where it had been on for awhile, but the redness stayed for a couple days as did a little itchyness and irritation. This happens everytime I have to put a bandaid on the piercing. Could this be an allergic reaction to the bandaid? I know it can't be a reaction to latex because I do hair and have to wear latex gloves. I just need to know what's going on because this itchyness is horrible and I have to have something over the piercing.
