Hello, I am worried about my mother-in-law. Both her eyes are red, and she said they feel like needles are poking her eyes and they hurt in sunlight. She had pneumonia a few months ago. Her ears also hurt and she is not eating well cause she can't swallow easily. What could this be? A nurse practitioner prescribed her allergy nasal spray.
There's a range of different causes for the red eyes that your mother-in-law is presenting. Although it could be an allergy to the nasal spray, it could also be something that's producing dry eye, an infection or inflammation of the eyes. To reach a diagnosis, a full examination on a slit lamp by an Ophthalmologist would be my suggestion, more so given that the treatment for this could go from changing the way of use of the nasal spray, lubricant drops, antibiotics or steroid drops, depending on the diagnosis.
