What Causes Redness In Eyes And Yellow Discharge On Eyes?

Hi, I'm having symptoms of a cold since the past week. Everything seems like the usual bout of cold that I normally get, however since the past three days my eyes have been red. Also, when I wake up in the morning, there's lots of yellow stuff (mucus?) around the eye - more than normal. Can this be conjunctivitis? I'm pretty sure I haven't come into contact or even been near a person with it since the past one month! Infact haven't even heard of any cases of conjunctivitis in my area...
