Hi. My father had colon surgery 3 days ago. Everything went fine. He was supposed to be released from hospital today. All of a sudden his potassium started to seriously drop. Dr gave him pills, they did not stop the drop. Now he is on iv. What caused this? What can happen?

Hi,
Low potassium occurs after colon surgery.Surgical procedure that alter the length of the colon can result in significant potassium loss.Because of very low potassium, that's why your father is on IV. But not to worry it will be recover after sometime.
Hope I have answered your query.
Best wishes
