What Causes Regrowth Of Black Nails In Toe After An Injury?
I m a nurse and damaged both great toe nails from equipment rolling over my feet. Both nails have fallen off and what has grown back are thick black nails. I also believe they may have also had toe nail fungus. I think they are starting to grow out but will not be smooth and pink. Besides an acrylic nail on top of the ugly nail there, is there any thing else, like a gel that can make the toenail look real? . The acrylic nail actually does hurt my great toes.
Nails can grow in an aesthetically unpleasing manner after an injury, even though the injured nail thickens and usually grows out, in certain cases the nail can remain thickened for up to six months until it changes by new growth.
A nail infected by fungus will also cause thickened, discoloured nails that are also brittle. You can treat this with a course of antifungals eg itraconazole or lamisil oral tablets for up to three months. Topical antifungals such as loceryl paint or clotrimazole ointment are not as effective when it comes to treating onychomycosis (fungal infection of the nails).
Covering the nail with acrylic will also worsen a fungal infection, the nail needs to be exposed to sunlight. Also ensure your feet are dry at all times and if you wear closed shoes, don't wear the same shoes everyday. If you want to ensure new growth with a normal nail, I suggest you to remove the nail surgically. Although its not a quick fix, you will be happy with the results in the long run.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
