17 year old female has a bruise on her mid to lower back approximately 4 inches long on both sides of the spine. This is the 3rd time this bruise has appeared. Hurts when she moves. Took her to the hospital when the bruise appeared before. They said nothing was wrong.
That is a very interesting bruise pattern. The muscles on either side of the spine are called the para-spinal (or erector spinae) muscles and are responsible for doing most of the extension of the upper body (these are really the work horses of the spine). Heavy lifting, extreme exercise, or even just sitting in an uncomfortable chair where you have to support your upper back with these muscle for an extended period could easily account for the pain.
The bruising does sound a little more that what I would expect to be honest. I do think this is worth getting checked out, to make sure that you don't have any predisposition to bleeding (Bleeding disorders) and if for no other reason so that a physician can in-person examine you.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
