What Causes Scar On Lower Back?

hello i have a friend who has a significant scar across his lower back. from one kidney to the other. its deep. hes not comfortable telling me the story behind the scar. so i am wondering what kind of weapon or whatever would cause such a scar. its about an half inch width and goes from one side of his lower back to the other. he said someone attacked him tried to cut him in half
