I have a history of divertiulitis.Last night I went to the er for severe lower ab pain.THey did an xray only and said that it was probably constipation, and told me to get milk magnesia.I did so and have had two bowel movements. The first one solid, the second one very soft.I still have the same pain...constant and stabbing.Should I go back to the er?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history of diverticulitis, had to go to the ER for severe lower abdominal pain, said to be constipation and gave milk of magnesia, had 2 motions, pain persists, constant and stabbing.
This means, the problem persists.
I would advise you for the following:
Clinical evaluation by a General Surgeon,.
CT scan of the abdomen to find the cause of pain, which most probably may be diverticulitis.
Get started with proper antibiotics, metronidazole and probiotics, you may get a relief.
Further management as per the findings and response to the treatment.
I find this answer helpful
