What Causes Severe Cough For A Week?

Hello. My 3 year old has had a worsening cough for about a week now. My mother in law thinks it is asthma, but i dont have any experience with this so dont know. however, he is now coughing every few minutes and today has started losing his voice. He says that his throat doesnt hurt him. But im worried because he has never lost his voice before. Should i take him to see someone and should he be going to daycare?
