What Causes Severe Diarrhea After Having Cefuroxime Axetil?
I was prescribed cefuroxime Axetil for a sinus infection and bronchitis. I had diarrhea while I was taking it. I took my last dose a week ago, but I am having gas, bloating, abdominal cramps, and explosive loose stools. I feel terrible! YYYY@YYYY
Severe diarrhea is due to antibiotic (Cefiroxime axetil) associated overgrowth of pathogenic gut flora.
Use of antibiotics like Cefuroxime axetil can result in overgrowth of the gut flora particularly the toxins of resistant bacteria clostridium difficile which produce a serious infection called "Pseudomembranous enterocolitis" resulting in severe diarrhea with or without blood and mucus, abdominal cramps, distension, etc.
This condition may occur while receiving therapy or even weeks to months after treatment has stopped.
You are advised to see your treating doctor for immediate care. Meanwhile do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications as they may worsen this condition.
