What Causes Severe Headache At The Back Of Head While Standing Up?

When I stand up, I have really, sudden, horrible headaches. There is pain all over, but the majority of it is in the back of my head (both left and right sides.) What could be the cause of this? It is really worrying me because they hurt so much when I stand up. But, like, right now, I m sitting down typing this and I am fine unless I cough or sneeze, in which case it hurst again.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

You could have an insufficient amount of cerebrospinal fluid circulating to keep the brain and its associated contents floating.

This can be an acquired or spontaneous problem and is typically diagnosed based upon exactly the story of how the headaches come on which is during a change in posture (such as going from lying or sitting to STANDING).

Headaches improve dramatically when patients lay back down. Treatment is usually by way of performing something called a BLOOD PATCH. Seek out a neurologist for more information on the correct diagnosis, proper testing, and definitive treatment options.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dariush Saghafi, Neurologist
