What Causes Severe Heart Palpitations After Taking Cipro Tablet?

I have afib and an artificial heart valve...have recently had uti and prescribed cipro and noticed a lot of palpitations. The info which came with rx mentioned that as one of the side effects. Should I discontinue taking rx and call my doctor on Monday?

Hello thanks for asking from healthcare magic.com

Ciprofloxacin is a broad spectrum antibiotic. The antibiotic belongs to fluoroquenelones group of antibiotics. These antibiotics are relatively safer antibiotics but if started with large doses these might cause symptoms like racing heart, palpitations, restlessness, anxiety like symptoms, dizziness, light headedness etc. In most of individuals taking the drugs with or after meals result in better tolerability and the palpitations reduce. Taking an antacid like Ranitidine before the taking the drug will also help to improve the tolerability. If symptoms become intolerable then consult with your doctor and ask for dose adjustments.

Thanks, Hope this helps. Take care
