What Causes Severe Itchiness In The Legs And Arms In An Elderly Person?

My 72 yr old hasband has been suffering for the past 3 days from a terrible itchyness on his arms, ankles, legs - so far his chest and back are not affected - he is able to sleep in 1-2 hr spurts before the "itchyness" wakes him -- he is miserable. There is no obvious rash, welts or skin irritations. We are in Cape Canaveral for the winter season. He thought it might be from too much sun and dry skin but for the past 2 days he has stayed indoors and has been lotioning up with Aveeno moisturizer but that hasn't helped, in fact the itch seems to be spreading to groin area. Has taken no new meds, or been exposed to any new foods, except we have had shrimp more than usual the past weeks. He needs some immediate help -- suggestions. Could a food allergy (shrimp) cause an itchyness like this (no rash, welts, irritations)? HELP. Marie

Hi,

Thanks for your question on HCM

I do understand your pain and discomfort

As per your history is concerned his problem is associated with many pathological causes so before proceeding in detail please do a blood differential count and stool examination. Add antihistamine like levocetrizine once a day in the evening. Take specific medication after exam reports only.

Hope that helps

Hello,
It could be a shellfish allergy. He could try taking antihistamines and keep using the lotion. If it is still so severe that he cannot sleep he should see a doctor, he may needs to be on a short course of steroids to calm this down.
