Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Nausea With Weight Loss In An Elderly Person?
Mother is in her 80's. Unable to eat more than half of a sandwich before getting nauseous. Now loosing weigh with shakes and no energy. Going down hill fast. Her doctor has been unable to find the problem. This has been going on for a few months. Has also seen Gastroenterologist he has not been able to find the problem.
I've read your query and understanding your concern about your mother.
I would like to tell you there are more than 50 conditions in elder patient that can cause nausea, loss of appetite and weight loss . Generally in elderly it should be related to stomach problems but if gastroenterologist did not find anything then we should look at other organs.
I don't know if she is taking any medicine as medical history is not provided. This can be related to kidney problems , brain problems , UTI , cancer of some organ . It is advisable to take a another opinion but this time with a MD Medicine.
By the time you will get an appointment you can give her Tab Ativan SOS. Give her to eat whatever she likes the most and encourage her to eat, change environment around her. She needs physical and mental support too to recover.
Hopefully I answered all your queries. Wish you Good Luck
