What Causes Severe Pain In Ankle Bone After Hitting It?

My husband got hit by a golf ball on his ankle bone this evening - he continued to play even though it was painful. By the time he came home it was very very painful and he could not put weight on it. Is it likely to be broken or just very badly bruised?? - little if any swelling to date - tender to touch. Can put a little weight on it now after taking painkillers??

I think he should get x ray of the ankle joint to confirm that there is no bony injury. If x ray is normal he can apply compression bandage and can walk over it. If there is any hairline fracture then he will need plaster. Also he should apply ice and compressive bandage.
