What Causes Severe Sickness After Being Bitten By An Insect?
My friend is a very active 17 year old girl. Had a tick bite about a month ago. It was red, hurt and didn t heal. She went to her doctor and tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Tick Fever. She was prescribed a 7 day course of doxycycline ( sp). She started feeling really bad. Stomach pain, couldn t eat or drink. After a week she went for a follow up and still tested positive. Was given another week of the meds. She is really sick now. Her mom took her to the after hours clinic and she was given saline solution..2 bags and sent home. 2 days later she goes to her Dr. She is worse. Severely dehydrated. Later that evening her legs go numb and her fingers turn white..really white..and her hands and arms draw up. Her breathing is shallow and rapid. Mom calls 911. She is given 4 bags of the saline solution..kept most of the night..sent home. She cannot move her legs and has a severe forehead headache. Sent home. It takes 2 of us to help her sit up and 3 of us to totally carry her. That was last Sunday..she is worse today. She is in a Children s hospital and had a MRI today..scheduled for a spinal tap tomorrow. Now the disease specialist is saying that it might not really be the Rocky Mountain Fever..but something else that was in her body that is now active. What on earth could it be? All I can find is mb a spinal tumor? Could the paralysis be temporary? This girl is an athlete. She is hydrated now as she is on the fluids in the hospital..please give us some clue as to what might be her situation.
Hi. As per your case history of insect bite my advice is - 1. Wear full sleeve clothes to avoid further such episodes. 2. Apply a soothing lotion like calamine lotion on affected region twice daily. 3. Take an antihistamine medication like levocetrizine twice daily for 7-10 days. 4. Other treatment options are oral antibiotics, oral steroid taken only after consulting a dermatologist.
Thanks. Dr. Harshit bhachech. MBBS, DDVL.
