What Causes Severe Soreness And Itchiness On The Buttocks?

I started feeling itchiness sorenes on my butt on Friday, but I thought it was just soreness from working out on last Wednesday. Then Saturday it really started itching and was a little sore and I thought nothing of it. Then Sunday it got worst I looked at it and it was some bumps with redness around it. I looked up the possibilities of what it could have been, and I thought it could have been a ringworm... Then I thought maybe herpes but I m not sure. I went to the doctors office yesterday (Tuesday) and I told the doctor I had a rash on my butt, I was kind of scared for him to look. But he asked did u want me to take a look at it I said yes and then he left the room and brought a nurse in and then they left and told me to undress from the bottom and put the robe on and he checked and said did it hurt or have any fluid coming out I said it gutted a little and no fluid. But he didn t tell me what it was he just said he would give me cream and medicine prescription. I didn t asked what he thought or knew it was because I was kind of embarrassed, when I knew I shouldn t be. The medicine he perceived me for was acyclovir, it said it was for herpes, shingles, and chicken pox. So Im confused. I m 20 years old and only had one partner.

Hello,

I reviewed your question. Itchy sore in the private area can certainly be quite embarrassing to have. From your description it is probably either Herpes simplex or Herpes zoster. The difference is that Herpes simplex is caused by the Herpes virus (different types), which is transmitted often by sexual contact, but can also be acquired from public toilet seats, towels etc.

Herpes zoster (or Shingles) are strictly limited to one side of the body and are a reactivation of the chickenpox virus (so usually you would have had the chickenpox first, and then the virus stays in the nerve ganglia next to your spine and can break out when your immune system is not functioning well because of stress or illness). From your age Herpes simplex is more likely.

It tends to recur at the same location (the same way as fever blisters on your lips can) and can be transmitted to sexual partners and other people if active and untreated.Fortunately the acyclovir your doctor prescribed helps both types of breakouts and should help within days.

I hope this answers your question. Let me know if you have additional questions or comments.

Regards,
Dr. Christine Sauer
