What Causes Severe Swelling Of Feet And Calves?

I usually am on a strict diet but there are times where I take a few days and eat a good amount of food and this food has a large amount of sodium. The next day my calves and feet get extremely swollen and they feel like they are going to pop. What can this be?

Dear patient
Swelling of both feet and calves may be due to retention of fluid in the body. Since you experience this only with increased intake of sodium this may be due to dependent oedema. Sodium is responsible for fluid retention in body. Is swelling permanent or it disappear with rest? If it goes with rest may be due to dependent edema. You need to consult physician and get examined for same.
