What Causes Severe Thirst?

I am 55yo woman. For past several months, I've been having excessive thirst that nothing seems to quench (water, soda, kool-aid). I am always hungry, no matter what I eat. I am trying to lose 5 pounds, but when I cut down or limit carbs, I get very weak and sleepy, not to mention I am still hungry.
